I'm a former high school history teacher, and after leaving teaching, I worked for almost 40 years at what was then the largest educational publisher, developing textbooks and technology for students and educators. I was talking with someone recently about how K-12 schooling hasn't really evolved to prepare students as critical thinkers, problem solvers, innovators, and collaborators for a rapidly changing world. That discussion got me thinking about the work I used to do on U.S. History textbooks. I would have no idea how to approach the last 10 years. There is no single version of our story that would play well in all parts of the country, but then there hasn't been one for decades. You'd have those who want the ALL CAPS version of our past and those who want to at least raise questions about aspects of it. That debate on the doorstep of our 250-year-old experiment, if handled with maturity and respect — aka in small caps and lowercase — is, in part, what the promise of America is about. Sadly, many miss the point and choose instead to wrap themselves in symbolism.
That is so difficult. I am so sorry your neighborhood has kinda lost its mind. Desperate old men, it sounds like, afraid their control of the country will be wrangled away from their clutching hands. I would think an anonymous call to the fire department or the dept of public works with concern about the flags caught in power lines might be efficient. I hung a flag in my window, a small old 48 star one because it's the easiest, on July 4. But here in Marin County 85% of the people are Dems and I don't think anyone thought I was MAGA! My neighbors know me! Lucky, just lucky.
I hate that the American flag has become a symbol of MAGA. And no, I didn’t believe there was really anything to celebrate.
